We couldn't decide on the band name for quite a while, as we wanted our name to reflect the music we are playing. So, it came to the vocalist's head spontaneously after listening to our first recording. The music seemed surrealistic, as though a ghost was singing in an empty castle… Good grief! But this is sur, complete surrealism!
The word "sur" is of French origin and literally means the preposition "on", "over". A dictionary for youngsters explains "sur" as slang meaning "something absurd, strange" as well as "original, unusual and attractive at the same time". In fact, all these descriptions fully coincide with our desire to be at the vanguard, different and flying over… So, being surreal! …
Then after being SUR for a while, we realized that our name does not really make sense in English sounding more like an abbreviation. So, we decided to make it SURREAL with SUR as an abbreviation. This name fully reflects our idea and concept of the music that we produce, and at the same time, it is full of contradictions like our music actually is.
